Sodium benzoate is a substance which is a widely used food preservative. It can be produced by reacting sodium hydroxide with benzoic acid.

USES:
 
  • The most common source of sodium benzoate is food; manufacturers use it as a preservative to prevent spoilage. Acidic products like sauerkraut, jellies and jams, hot sauce and soda are the most common sources of sodium benzoate.

  • It is also used  in cosmetics and personal care product formulas as a fragrance ingredient, masking ingredient, anti-corrosive agent.

  • Sodium benzoate has recently been incorporated into plastics, like polypropylene, where it has been found to improve clarity and strength.  

Application:
 
  • Sodium benzoate is used as a medication to treat hyperammonemia, a rare disorder that causes excess ammonia to accumulate in the blood.

  • Sodium benzoate is also used in fireworks as a fuel in whistle mix.

  • It is used as an intermediate during the manufacture of dyes.

  • It is also used in tobacco and pharmaceutical preparations
